Made in Adobe Illustrator, 2019. A series of designs for playing cards, inspired by my rovings along the shores of Lake superior the people around me. This series exalts the people who guide us, and embeds them in the landscape.
“Rise, for Dawn has Broken.”
Dawn is the mother who rises while it is still dark. She brings gentle morning light to wake us, and exudes the quiet peace known only in the morning. Dawn stands in the water, raising the sun over Lake Superior; her gown trails behind her in a reflection of the sun’s glimmers.
“Be Diligent; Toil While the Sun Shines.”
Day is the time of labor. Day is the embodiment of working men and women who labor so we may eat. They sacrifice their bodies to raise structures from the ground, and keep society moving. The bottom line is uncompromising, and theirs is the burden of providing. He strains to hold the sun up for us.
“Dusk Sees Those Things Yet Undone.”
Dusk has taken the sun from the sky and retreats inland, as we all must at day’s end. He reminds us that time is passing and to build our futures in the present. These teachers bear the burden of preparing others, but ultimately knowing it is up to the student to make their own way. The urgency they instill bears the same weight as the sun setting on a summer’s day.
“Go Swiftly, for the Night is Dark and Full of Terrors.”
Night is the youngest of the four. She ventures forth in the dark, not unprepared, but vulnerable nonetheless. She has much to learn, and her light can reveal but little.
